The top-selling item, the famed wooden balls worn by Mick Fleetwood on the band’s 1977 album Rumours, brought in an amazing $128,000.
Furhtermore, another notable event during the auction was the selling of John McVie’s one-of-a-kind Alembic Series 1 fretless bass, which was used to record The Chain. The legendary 4-string bass, which John McVie frequently used in the studio and onstage between 1976 and 1980, sold at for an staggering $100,000, much exceeding its pre-sale estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.
Other standouts included a Kramer Ferrington electro-acoustic bass that brought $15,625, a 1976 Rumours Tour Alembic Series 1 that brought $28,800, a 1970s Ernie Ball Earthwood acoustic bass that brought $25,600, and a 1962 Fender Bass VI that Peter Green gave away that brought $22,400.
The auction’s sale of Christine McVie’s collection, who passed away three days prior to the event, was a touching occasion. The outfit used by McVie on the Rumours album’s back cover sold for $56,250, more than five times its $10,000 estimate.
A percentage of the auction’s revenues will go to MusiCares, which named Fleetwood Mac its Person of the Year in 2018. It will use the money to fund the organization’s work helping underprivileged people of the music industry.
