When we talk about Khruangbin, it’s impossible not to spotlight their bassist, Laura Lee. Her signature sound and groove have been essential in elevating the band to global stardom. With their Grammy nomination shining a well-deserved spotlight on their innovative blend of genres, it feels like the perfect time for a Laura Lee appreciation post.
How Laura Lee’s Unique Style Defines Khruangbin’s Sound
Laura’s distinct, melody-driven basslines are the heart of Khruangbin’s sound, giving the band their unmistakable groove. What makes her style so special is her approach—unorthodox, soulful, and rooted in the joy of creating music. Despite having no formal training, Laura embraces her unique method of playing, famously “attaching” two fingers together instead of using all four. As she puts it, this limitation brings out the fun, bouncy feel of her playing, much like James Jamerson’s iconic one-finger technique.
At the center of Laura’s journey is her beloved SX Jazz Bass, an instrument that has been her go-to since 2009. A gift from bandmate Mark Speer to celebrate her college graduation, this inexpensive knockoff bass became so much more than just an instrument. Mark customized it with new pickups, flatwound strings, and a killer setup, transforming it into what Laura describes as her “favorite sounding bass.”
This bass has been with her through it all—learning to play, writing her first songs, and touring across five continents. “It’s been through me learning how to hit a string, writing my first song, and has traveled with me to five continents—multiple times over,” Laura reflects. Despite having access to other high-end instruments, nothing matches the comfort and confidence this bass gives her. It’s her muse, her constant companion, and even though she hasn’t changed the strings in over a decade (knocks on wood), it continues to inspire her.
That said, eagle-eyed fans have recently spotted Laura experimenting with a new bass in a few online videos. While her SX Jazz Bass remains her mainstay, it’s exciting to see her exploring new sonic possibilities as she continues to evolve as an artist.
Laura’s story is a testament to the power of embracing individuality and staying true to yourself. Her playing isn’t just about technique but, emotion, energy, and connection. And as Khruangbin continues to bring their hypnotic sound to audiences worldwide, Laura Lee remains the groovy, soulful force at the heart of it all, helping propel the band to Grammy recognition.
Here’s to Laura Lee of Khruangbin—a true inspiration and the bass hero we didn’t know we needed. We hope Khruangbin gets the recognition they deserve for years of grooving with a well-earned Grammy.
