The recording sessions for the group’s chart-topper Unlimited Love album, which by the way peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200 album charts, also produced Return of the Dream Canteen. The largest rock album of the year, it also marked their second #1 career debut on the list. It is also worthy to mention that the group has never before published two albums back-to-back in the same year.
The band worked with veteran producer and trusted creative advisor Rick Rubin on these 17 songs. Incorporating bursts of extraterrestrial instrumentation, primitive rhythms, and contemplative lyrical provocations, the Chili Peppers once more channeled the strength of their partnership.
Additionally, the group received three nominations for the American Music Awards, including Favorite Rock Artist, Favorite Rock Album for Unlimited Love, and Favorite Rock Single for “Black Summer,” as well as an MTV Europe Music Award nomination for Best Rock. The AMAs will stream live on ABC on November 20.
This Sunday, October 16, they’ll play the main stage at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Austin, Texas, for their final performance of 2022. It’s their final live performance of the year after the largest tour of their career thus far. The stadium tour, meanwhile, continues in Australia and New Zealand in January 2023.

With “Eddie” last month, they prepared the ground for Return of the Dream Canteen. Beyond accumulating millions of streams, it also immediately drew praise from the critics. The amazing bass work and the “classically snaky John Frusciante guitar line” were commended by both Billboard and The New York Times, respectively. The New York Times praised it as “the sound of a band in a room, still pushing one another.” In contrast, Rolling Stone described it as “anthemic.”
