Ron Carter: Finding the Right Notes, a documentary that was shot over the period of six years will premiere on October 21st on PBS. This documentary encourages audiences to get to know the man behind the bass.
Carter has earned more than 2,500 musical credits over a fruitful six-decade career. He is best known for being the driving force behind the rhythm of Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet. During his long career, he provided melodic and rhythmic support for artists including Paul Simon, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Chet Baker, and even A Tribe Called Quest.
Even in the face of prejudice and severe personal loss, Carter addresses every obstacle with unwavering grace and determination. Carter’s inventiveness across all musical genres was only bolstered by an earlier rejection from the segregated tenet of classical music.
In the movie, he says, “No one’s going to tell me what I can’t do. “They might say I’m not allowed to work there. They might say I can’t enter through the front door. But they aren’t letting me know what I’m incapable of. Finding the Right Notes is a colorful portrayal of one of America’s greatest musical trailblazers. The documentary features exclusive concert footage and intimate interviews with jazz greats like Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, and Jon Batiste.
