As word of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine circulated last week (February 24), artists took to social media to express their outrage. Despite repeated diplomatic efforts, threats, and penalties from world leaders, Russia has been building up its troops around the Ukrainian border for months.
“Remembering playing for our friends in Ukraine in Independence Square in 2008 and thinking of them in these difficult times. We send our love and support.” Paul McCartney posted on social media. Singer songwriter Miley Cyrus also took to social media to voice her concerns about the Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “I pledge my support to everyone in Ukraine who has been touched by this attack.”

“Very shocked to see so many Ukrainians being killed, a totally unnecessary war being deliberately started in Europe.” Peter Gabriel wrote on Twitter.
The attacks on Ukraine’s largest cities follow Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s announcement of a “special military operation,” which since has devolved into a full-fledged invasion. Putin also issued a strong warning to other countries against interfering with his intentions.
“To anyone considering interfering from the outside: If you do, you will suffer consequences unlike any you have ever experienced,” Putin said. “We’ve made all of the necessary decisions.” I’m hoping you can hear me.”
Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has stated that his country is under attack “from the south, north, east, and from the air.”

This action is a war crime, and whatever else happens, he should never be allowed to leave Russian soil again.
