Thundercat, a virtuoso bassist and singer with multiple GRAMMY awards, is set to release a special deluxe edition of his album Apocalypse on March 1, marking its tenth anniversary since the original release in 2013.
This enhanced version includes two previously unreleased tracks, “Before I loved myself ‘I’ pooped my ankles (true),” recorded with Austin Peralta and Taylor Graves, and “Paris” with Mono/Poly. This deluxe album by Thundercat showcases exclusive rainbow holographic artwork encased in a transparent PVC outer slipcase featuring an “x-ray” holographic skull print.
Filled with standout tracks such as “Heartbreaks + Setbacks,” “Lotus and the Jondy,” “Tron Son,” and the cosmic funk anthem “Oh Sheit, It’s X,” Thundercat blends pop, soul, electronica, prog rock, and funk, elevating his signature bass lines to meet the celestial touch of Executive Producer Flying Lotus.
Upon its original release in 2013, Pitchfork praised the record’s “endearing blend of plainspoken nonchalance and almost limitless musical eccentricity,” awarding it an 8.2 rating. Despite its apocalyptic title, LA Weekly remarked that Thundercat’s Apocalypse sounds more like a new beginning. Complex even declared it the “best album of the year,” describing it as a “shimmering collection of celestial funk.”
2023 has been remarkable for Thundercat, marked by notable tour stops at Glastonbury, sold-out shows at the Sydney Opera House, and performances alongside rock legends Red Hot Chili Peppers. His North American headline run featured iconic venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheater and The Greek Theatre in LA, with special guests like Donald Glover/Childish Gambino, Steve Lacy, Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, Suicidal Tendencies, and more.
Thundercat’s collaborations extended to Gorillaz on their album Cracker Island, where he featured on the title track, starred in the official video, and performed at Coachella and the MTV European Music Awards—the artist’s diverse year included performing at the Grammy telecast and releasing “No More Lies” with Kevin Parker, earning acclaim from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and The Guardian.
