The band enlisted Eva Gardner, who played bass on the band’s debut album. With her booming tone and sophisticated bass patterns, Gardner’s bass dominates the entire record.

This new The Mars Volta album showcases guitarist and composer Omar Rodriguez-López and vocalist and songwriter Cedric Bixler-Zavala. This record is their most developed, clear-cut, and intense, channeling their sound and rage to a maximum effect. As the band noted in interviews that this record signifies a change in their sound. According to Bixler-Zavala, “I wanted to do something else,” he told the Times. He continues, “The most intriguing new trend, in my opinion, is to simplify things and create our own brand of pop.”
